UEFA Champions League is an annual club competition for clubs in Europe that was created in 1955. It used to be called the European Cup. 22 teams have won the European cup thus far, including Real Madrid being the most successful, winning 13 overall titles, the five consecutive seasons of 1955-56 from 1959-60. Most recently, they have won four titles over the past five years, with three titles coming in succession in 2019 and 20.
European Cup Era 1955 to 1991: European cup and the tournament was a knockout (home/away) tie-ups, with just champion teams from European nations participating. Real Madrid won 5 back to back titles over the first five seasons. They added another one in 1966, which made them the most dominant team of the era.
Modern Era 1992 to date: It was re-branded as UEFA Champions League and a group stage was added to the tournament at first that teams that finished 2nd or 3rd in the top leagues could take part. It also brought in more competition. Since 1992, there was only one team Real Madrid managed to defend the title, which happened between 2016 and the year 2018. We can say that the titles won after 1992 are worth more than they were in the earlier “European Cup Era”. Real Madrid and Barcelona have been the two teams with the most dominance since the new format was created with both winning seven and five titles respectively in the modern age.
Overall Spanish teams (Real Madrid 13 and Barcelona 5) have been the most successful, winning 18 titles. Italian teams have won the title at least 12 times (Milan 7 Inter 3.0 and Juventus two) as well. English clubs also have won 12 titles (Liverpool 5 Manchester United 3, Nottingham Forest 2, Aston Villa, and Chelsea twice). Before we look at the most famous champions of all time, here is a list of most successful teams during the European Cup and Champions League time.
